Sunburn, always a risk, always a pain when you get it. My mother recommends slapping some olive oil on the affected areas, as it soothes the burn. I would add a couple of drops of lavender oil to it, if only to stop you from smelling like a chip shop!
As with all burns, you need to get the heat out of it. If you can bear it, a cool/cold shower wouldn't go amiss.

I've heard grated raw potato is good, but not used it myself.
One I have used is the juice from the leaves of African Marigolds. Scrunch them up in your hands and roll them vigorously to extract the juice, and then put it straight onto the skin. I have had spectacular results with this, unfortunately recent attempts to grow African Marigolds have resulted in well-fed slugs and no flowers.

I've also heard that urine applied to the affected area is good, but haven't tried it (nor do I intend to).
Remember folks, prevention is better than cure, get the factor 30 on.

I'm really lucky and just go brown without the redness. The boys have to wear the highest factor I can get and then I make them put T-shirts and hats on. Can't be too careful, can you? Cluck, cluck - mother hen impression.

Rhi are you sure that is African Marigolds? According to my books it is European Marigolds, Calendula, that you use for sunburn, arthritis and skin complaints.

I'm sure they're African (still calendula?) the small dark orange and yellow frilly things with the skinny leaves. Perhaps you can use both?

African marigolds are Tagetes erecta they can cause irritation to digestive systems & sensitive skins, pot marigold however is a Calendula
Also tomatoes are supposed to be good. lavender & chamomile oils are good for this as it sooths but remember to dilute in a carrier oil.

Aloe Vera, especially the leaves. Unfortunately, I don't believe it grows in this country But it does grow in Thailand, where the sun can roast you just by reflecting off the swimming pool when your lying in the shade Having someone slowly message in a whole load of juice and herbs, and then being wrapped up in Aloe Vera leaves almost from head to toe I can definitely recommend 24 hours later....no sunburn, and a trip to the shop to stock up on that water resistant only apply once every eight hours factor 40. White Coyote ;D PS: Short aside - my wife went into a shop when we just arrived in Australia and said "Have you got any factor 20?" They just laughed at her and said "That ain't gonna cut it here, mate..."

Thanks Rob - I think I've just demonstrated the perils of giving medical advice on the internet, and also why I was in the office at the Garden Centre and not out selling plants! ;D

I got a sunburnt forehead and nose and lips at Download last weekend. Wore plenty of sunscreen, wore a hat but the sun still got me. Got blisters on my lips and my face was peeling! Looked so attractive!!!! The rest of me is brown though as although I am fair skinned I don't burn, I may go slightly red straight away but then go brown.

We have an aloe but I'm not sure what type it is though, I'm going to have to ask lorna to identify it.
