Is there a burial mound at Wychbury Hill as I have been passed the back of it & seen a rather large mound & it doesn't look natural, does anyone know what it is?

I thought it was the site of an Iron age fort built by the Hwicce? (which I guess is where the name is from ... Hwicce+Bury = place of the Hwicce)

There is a glimmer in the back of my mind that says that Pollen is right, it was part of an Iron Age fort.... Hmmm, has been several years since I did archaeology but I seem to remember that was the consensus of the field report. I will have a look at the B.A.R. online report agin and check.

I know about the hillfort part & have been up that bit but the cicular mound behind it, I've only seen it from the bus & maybe on private land.

On the o s 1:25 000 map there is a reservoir marked as a raised square. Next to this is a raised circular mound .It could be a grassed over spoil heap or a burial mound.
These are on the edge of the woods on the slope above the A491.
I think I will go and have a look later as i was going for a walk up clent .

My mum (who studied archeology) says it is one of a line of hillforts which stretched across the area.

Mounds were also constructed as territorial markers, some with and some without burials.

Hi,
I've just been discussing this matter (Wychbury, I mean) on another forum. It is supposedly an Iron Age Hillfort and contains a magnificent spread of yew trees throughout it.... I've visited the site numerous times over the years and, coincidentally, have recently taken an interest in it again. (In particular, some of the folklore, mysteries and 'peculiar legends / stories' associated with the site).
Apparently, the place has a history of Roman-esque ghosts, peculiar feelings(?), magickal practices, the sighting of a 'Green Man' style creature(!?!?) and A.B.C. encounters......
From what I've heard, there is supposed to be a tumulus associated with the site, though I've long thought the tump-like mound I've seen to be possibly something to do with the reservoir mentioned by Phil(?)
It's an absolutely gorgeous place.....
Regards,
Enderfay
