A ghost is a definite 'person' (or ex-person ;D), or animal, e.g. the ghost of the white lady, or the ghost of a headless rider, etc. whereas a spirit is non-human, e.g. the spirit of a place (sometimes called a wight), or poltergeist activity, etc.
A ghoul is a fictional being which eats dead human flesh, preferably from young children.

thats a new one .
but i've always believed that spirit is the person, and a ghost is the energy left behind.
i'm not sure why i've added the goul part

A spirit can also be the spirit of a place left behind such as a smell or feeling or sound from the past locked in the walls like a recording or something (though I think that also has another name). I'm friends with a medium who calls anything that was living spirits. My boyfriend also sees a lot in particularly shadow people which appear in human form but shadowlike and my sis and I saw what we believe to be a dog in the same form.
Personally we interchange ghost and spirit but when I spent the night up Derby Old Gaol (very recommended) they said there are spirits, ghosts and the other recording thing.
I am a believer having experienced too much with no other explanation not to.

actully ghosts are the recorded events "energy left behind" you don't actully have to be dead to be a ghost if you've raised enough energy ti inprint into the walls of the building. obveiously the smaller the room/building the more energy not needed.

Like feeling the energy when in a circle esp if cast one in the same place a lot, the energy when drumming and we can def feel the energy when we go morris dancing.

kind of, the energy would have to leave a inprint so that the sound or figures of the people making the sound would still be there after the people leave.

I have no experience of ghosts at all - but the reports that I have read support Duane's view. The Chester Patrol is supposedly the ghosts of a small patrol of Roman soldiers who appear to march with just the upper parts of their bodies showing above the tarmac. Historical records show the old road to have been three feet below the present one.
"Spirit " can mean all sorts of things. I too get a feeling of an entity that might be thought of as "The Spirit of Place" Also I regularly call on animal spirits for assistance and to convey thoughts to others. Right now I like to think that there is a raven spirit sitting on my shoulder - its fun and helps when I'm feeling down. It also helps when I am thinking of a friend also to think of sending the raven as a messenger. [Just realised a coincidence - no Duane I had my raven sitting up there before your new incarnation appeared.]
I do think that it is important not to fear ANY of these things as fear can manifest in all sorts of negative ways.
