I was in the land of the mega-midge last year (Scotland) and most of us avoided getting bitten by applying Avon's "Skin so Soft" oil. It definitely seemed to work - I didn't get bitten once.
Apparantly it's the SAS preferred insect repellent too!

Drach is completely correct, when i went to India the SKin so soft ointment and shower gel is perfect but if its bugs around your home incence is brilliant!
(How rude Drach - land of midge?)
