This is another of my strange requests, if anyone sees an Oak tree with galls on it, (preferably within reach!!) can you pick them off for me please? The oak trees should have the remnants of last years gall wasp hatching and they don't harm the tree not even if you pull them off!! I know there are a couple of things planned for the Lickeys and such which I can't come to, so if people could search me some oak galls out I'd be extremely grateful!! I need a couple of pounds in weight of them.
Oh, you probably want to know why I want them? I have an old recipe for making ink and I want to try it, I'd love to be able to sell "Old Original Pen Museum Ink" in our shop!!!

Hi,
I hadn't forgotten about this item. But
I have not found any oak galls this year. Apparently there is a drastic shortage of wasps in general including the little one that crates the oak gall.
I thought of this when I was at a garden centre over the weekend - In the tea room they had several lavender recipes including lavender cake and lavender ink [lavender scented ink made from commercial ink] Would you be interested?

Lavender Ink.
15 grammes [half oz.] of dried lavender flowers 6 tbsp Water Small bottle of ink.
Crush lavender and put into saucepan with water and bring to boil. [Use cauldron if you haven't got a saucepan - P ]
Simmer for thirty mins -[This isn't easy with so little water but is possible - P ]
Strain - pressing down well, mix the liquid with the commercial ink.
As soon as the envelope is opened the delicate and intangible fragrance will waft and linger over the pages.
Acknowledgments to Dierdre of Oakgate Nurseries, Ellerdine, Telford.
Of COURSE you will also have an invisible message written in lemon juice ready to develop over a candle flame!!!!!!!!!!
Enjoy,
Pat

We tried the lemon juice thing and it doesn't work, maybe in theory but not in practice!! I've got a recipe for Walnut ink which gives a rather nice sepia colour I'm told!!

Thats OK, no rush!! There seems to have been very little Oak Gall wasp activity this year as it has been so damp. The gardeners at the Botanical gardens have looked everywhere and found none this year.
