Has anyone got the ingredient measures and method to make sloe gin?

Half a pound of sloes (228g), pricked with a fork. Half fill a bottle with them and add equal amount of sugar. Then top up with gin and leave a few months..... Thanks to my Self Sufficiency book for that. Willing guinea pig here when you need one, Vicki. You know I've got a soft spot for sloe gin.... or any gin really!!! Sam xx

I have been told if you freeze them first they split so no need to prick them all. Think i might give this a go.

I have no idea what a sloe gin is. I'm probably the only one too! Hehe. Hi Bexta sloes are the fruit of the Blackthorn bush. By themselves they're quite bitter, but if you steep them in a bottle of gin, they impart a wonderful flavour. You can tell blackthorn from hawthorn, as the thorns are longer, and the blackthorn flowers first, without the leaves, whilst hawthorn puts its leaves out before its flowers. Sloes look like miniature plums, about 1/2 to 3/4 inch, and are a darkish purple colour. bb Rhiannon

Merry Meet!
I made sloe vodka this past year and wished I had made a lot more!! It tastes fantastic! Sort like a liqueur or sweet sherry only a nice deep ruby colour.
One way to get around all the pricking of each sloe berry you can wash the berries, drain off all the water and pop them in the freezer. They will all split and you can take them out the next day and make the sloe vodka/gin.
Great to make up in August/September and then drink at Yule!

It's a pitty that gin doesn't have a wonderful flavour. I find it's a waste of sloes putting them in gin having drunk it thinking this is nice until the perfuminess of the gin kicks in & spoils it. Sorry not a gin fan in the slightest. Sloe & blackcurrant cordial is good.
