[snipt!] Was going to respond with the 'Baby with two heads' post a big evangelical 'signs of doom and witchery' rant, but felt it was in poor taste. I started writing and realized it belonged here... I just keep thinking though, y'know, there's not meant to be this many filthy apes on the planet. This is why I feel we have so many, many problems. Nature has a way of keeping all things in balance, but we are out of balance, everything nature comes up with, we beat, we have no predators and no real equals. Eventually we'll either have to find a balance or we're going to f*** up this planet so badly it'll not be able to support us anymore. I don't think the planet is doomed, the Mother will always be here and life WILL continue, we'll have just messed our chance up. It's depressing to think that we, as a species, are to selfish, stubborn and greedy to do anything about it until it starts to affect them. Thing is, by the time it affects us, it'll be too late to do anything about us. As Bill Hicks says: Stop your rutting, just for a day, until we can sort out this whole food/air deal Too many ppl taking up room for food to feed 'em. Too many urban areas destroying the countryside, too many people demanding products that cause irreperable damage to the environment, to many lazy, stupid, selfish, parasites, taking everything, but giving nothing back. It makes me sad, it makes me sick it makes me think, sometimes, that we could lose a third of the world's population. I mean a third, not too harsh is it? Sorry for that, just needed to vent ...

I agree with your point entirely, especially the use of the term "parasite". If you look at our behaviour, the way we colonise an area, strip it of all it's resources, multiply and then move on to start the whole process over again, you would be forgiven for comparing us to a virus. As you say, if we don't clean up our act Mother WILL do it for us and maybe we won't be around afterwards. Sadly, I feel that people give lip service to the whole issue rather than getting off their backsides to do anything constructive. In a recent survey 80% of people said they were concerned about the environment yet only 20% were pro-active in making change. I think, as with anything, only government legislation will make change. Trouble is that governments have too many financial connections and bonuses linked in to the worst polluters. (Here endeth the rant)!!

I've registered for an allotment to cut down food miles we are recycling as much as possible & getting as energy efficient electricals as we can afford, looking at getting a water butt too & I need to get another compost bin as the existing one is full. We use fabric bags for shopping & buy local when possible. I've also strarted knitting with wool from the UK to try & cut down on clothing milage too.
Am I as green as I want to be, not by a long shot, am I as green as should be probably not but I'm trying, but it does annoy me when people don't

I think the problem is that people seem to imagine that we all have to live life at a subsistence level to be green. In actual fact, if we all did as you do we wouldn't need to cut back so much. However, because of those that do nothing, the reality is everyone else has to pick up their failings. I also notice that the ones who moan the most about environmental issues are often the ones who do the least. The ultimate way to get them moving is to hit them where it hurts, by which I refer to their wallets. I almost leapt for joy when I read about the new grading system for road tax. If someone wants to go to Tescos in a vehicle suitable for a polar expedition then fine, make em pay a crippling road tax. And before anyone says it, I would like to point out that I have had 3 children, complete with pushchairs and all that goes with it, a full shop from the supermarket and my ex-wife all fit into an old honda civic - so no pulling the "but you don't know what it's like with a family", crap. Buy a roof box and save yourself a few grand on buying a gas guzzler. (here endeth the 2nd rant- time for a fairtrade coffee and read of permaculture mag)

Warning! Bad language although words starred out! [rant]Thankfully, I'm not saying we should all return to an agrarian [sp?] society, what really gets me angry is willful ignorance. this stupid, ignorant belief that it's got nothing to do with them. It's someone else's problem. And when it all goes tits up, they'll be the first ones to grumble "why didn't anyone do anything" It is the selfishness, greed and 'me first' attitude that makes me so so angry. I try to be a good person, I try to be helpful and kind, but every day these selfish f**kers cheat and wheedle and bully their way ahead. There is a saying, Nice guys finish last. As a nice guy I'm starting to get a bit sick of it. To make things worse these f***ing idiots are breeding like f***ing rats (although that is a slur on rats). Is this our heritage, is this what we will become? We are fast becoming the first planet wide case of cancer. We keep spreading and spreading killing all that's around it.[/rant] I agree that we all need to do our bit to help the planet. It's like a lot of things, if ppl did the right thing, the world would be much better, BUT see above rant....

We don't have to live at subsistence level but we can't go on living as we do even with the present massive imbalance between the fabulously wealthy [that's you and me in case you didn't recognise the description] and the 80% poor of the world. I'm sure that everyone has heard the statistic "If we all lived like the population of the UK we would need the resources of 3 planets"
So what is going to give? Do we who care need to sink our lifestyles allowing those who don't to continue?
Without the present massive socio-industrial system medicine can't function as it does today. Do we decrease the modal [not average] expectation of life? I'm over 60 - is it right for me to expect the huge investment in time and other resources to keep me alive? Should I just have a quiet talk with my doctor and wait?
How do we tell the developing nations that they don't want four wheel drives and plasma screen tellies? Every entertainment image we produce promotes this lifestyle?
"Mess" is a technical term in problem solving - in which the solution to a problem takes more resources than were diverted by the original problem. We are in a mess!
The next level is a Syndrome - a problem that has no predictable solution no matter WHAT resources are thrown at it. We might even be there!
I care a lot and I'm trying my best but frankly I think that Gaia will restore the balance not me with my green wheelie bin..
