Erm, I hate to put a downer on things but you do know that holly doesn't grow very fast don't you? It only grows about 25 - 30 cm a year and if you cut it back too far it will die off. The botanical gardens has had to remove some holly trees this year because they have been cut back too far the last two years for their greenery. The holly that has berries is female and the one without is male otherwise known as Queen and King, hence ' Of all the trees that are in the wood, the holly bears the crown'. (The Holly and The Ivy.)

Thankyou gwenifer, i didn,t realise this, though luckily if i only take a small amount from each holly bush on my walk it should be okay!(I hope) I wasn,t thinking of stripping a whole tree...but i'm glad you pointed this out as it is something to think about!xx

Cut only 10 - 15 cms and make sure you leave an angled cut so that the rain will run off and not rot the rest of the stem. Oh and make sure the sun has burned off the frost before you start cutting.........

I had a chat with Vicky today at the family coffee moot and the salt dough craft moot will take place during the Easter school hols, provisionally on Monday the 2nd April, at the Pen Museum (I have a microwave there!!) There may be a small charge (£1 or 2) to cover materials, but as it will be for adults AND children I will look at getting funding for it! More details nearer the time...........
